Guys looked absolutely horrible in the first half....missing easy bunnies, open threes, and getting beat to the ball everywhere on the floor. Testament to how bad Tech was that we were only down 7. Should have been down 15 plus.
Did what we should do in the second half. Glad we could pick it up, but not going to win road games against average/above average teams if we keep starting that way. Need to come ready to play.
Liked that Raivis got some time and hit a couple of big buckets against a D1 team. If he can just give us 7-10 productive minutes that would be a huge boost. He also boxed out fairly well. He's a interesting matchup for anyone in that he's just mobile enough and can hit the three so you can't put a sizeable/slow post player on him, but he's big enough to shoot over just about any wings/guards you see in most leagues. He will be a spot matchup play until further development as he's also not quick enough to guard wings/guards so you have to hide him on non scoring big guys on defense
Anumba played well again. He's going to be really good (he already is)
We are so damn soft. We can score the ball on anyone, no worries there, but our season will be dependent on if these guys can find some toughness and rebound, finish through contact. Glad that Ferguson can consistently hit the three now, but he needs to get tougher, got pushed around and bothered by getting hit underneath. We need him to play tough and rebound the damn ball with some force.
Really goes for everyone on the team. I wish we had a Josh Davenport or Otis Daniels or Tevin Prescott. Someone needs to step up and play that role. Be tough, get on the floor, play some defense.
I'm sick of seeing 5 times a game a guy just coast through the lane for an uncontested layup or dunk..

We didn't show up offensively for most of the first half, but made up for it in the second half to get that W. I hope Broman can shoot like that for the rest of the season and Anumba just keeps up what his been doin so far we will be a tough team to play against in conf play.

This game was horrendous. Period.
This team is one of the worst defensive Winthrop teams I think I've ever seen. Barely anyone plays help-side defense, and as mentioned above, guys get by their man and no one slides over to help. Our rotations are awful and sporadic.
The other thing that drove me INSANE, was watching how many times this team turned the ball over on sheer carelessness. I'd say 75% of our turnovers were from traveling or standing out of bounds. I mean, how does this happen? How does this happen to a Division 1 basketball team night in and night out??? I think Adam Pickett, alone, traveled 3 or 4 times. In total, I think there were 6 or 7 traveling violations. I mean thats really really sad, and a waste of possessions. These are unforced turnovers. The worst kind.
The offense was completely stagnant at times, but of course the shooting improved in the second half. I still think overall that we had a lot of trouble getting into the paint and getting layups/shots around the rim.

Different subject but not worthy of a thread; anyone see that Radford beat #17 Texas? Sweet! I guess the Bevos were too busy thinking about the football game today. Boomer Sooner!

Radford will probably dominate our conference. We have no one who can guard Ed Polite Jr. or Carlik Jones. They out match us, and will physically be too much for this Winthrop team.
I would be shocked if we beat them... If they keep going at this rate, they might be ranked by the time they play us in February.
We need to show we can compete with a team that's any good at all, and up to this point, we haven't. We need a reassuring, solid win on our resume, and right now our only D1 victories come against awful teams in Tennessee Tech and SIUE.

I'm just ready for conference play, as all the doomsday stuff I think it a little premature. Again, when you play either really bad teams and really good teams on the road, it's tough to get a read about where you stand. I didn't/don't expect us to beat UK/Vandy/Davidson/SIU on the road---we should beat Davidson/SIU at home.
So far the only things I can tell from OOC play is Presby is a lot better than in the past, Radford will be fighting for a regular season title, and UNCA is really freaking bad. That's about it.
If we can clean up the turnovers and improve defensively, both things that can happen as the season progresses (and have tended to do that under Kelsey)---then we'll have a good shot at the regular season title. The only thing that really worries me is the rebounding, I just dont' see that getting better, but we weren't a good rebounding team when we got the 13 seed a couple years ago, so if we can clean up the other areas, we can make up for it.
