Lots of Nova fans consider this to be Jay Wright’s worst coaching job. Lots of excuses: covid issues, injuries, etc..., but bottom line this is probably the worst job he’s done on the mainline. He had a worse team in 2012, but those players were cheeks and he had to clean house and rebuild, which he did. He might have to clean house again after this season too. It’s just not a good team.
Lots of fan boy leg humpers point to Gillespie’s injury for the excuse, but CG was on the court during the coat hanger performance in February. Nova getting waxed on by St. John’s then waxed off by butler, it would have made Kermit Gosnel cringe. Just not a good team even with CG.
Jeremiah Robinson Early Entry is sort of a joke. He doesn’t suck, he’s an above average player, but he’s no where close to a nba player. But the season has pretty much been dominated by his nba tryout. He can’t shoot from outside (20-something percent 3 ot shooter) and if you wanted somebody to miss an easy lay up, he’s a good choice. Seems like a good kid who works hard but he’s limited athletically and his skills are not that stellar. Most nova fans will tell you that no player has regressed more from thanksgiving to March than what we saw out of Mr Early Entry this year. But hey, the fan boys will tell you he’s going nba next year so enjoy him while you can, right? Anyway, I wish him luck in Europe or the Developmental league or wherever he opts to play next year. Honestly he might be best off transferring to an Atlantic 10 team if he wants tk actually lead a team to some wins because he wasn’t able to do that in the Big East when called upon after CG went down.
Justin Moore isn’t that good. The hope was that he would be a break out player this year and he has high end potential, but he just didn’t develop properly this year. I guess this can be blamed on the covid stuff, but at the end of the day he’s not all that good. He can’t shoot (sub 30% from 3 since the return from covid pause). He is not a play maker. He can create his own shot off the dribble but it’s not like he’s Randy foye or Kyle Lowry in that respect. His isolation offense seems a bit out of place when he tries it, like he has no handle on the offensive flow of things. He could be good in the future, but not this year.
Jermaine Samuels is solid enough as a role player, and he can come up big at times. But this team had such poor chemistry this year that Jermaine has no confidence and just deferred all year to CG and Moore and Mr Early Entry. When he gets aggressive good things happen, and he’s good on defense and rebounding, but he’s timid so his contributions are limited offensively.
Brandon Slater is a good athlete who plays good defense and a Samuels-lite role on the boards, but he’s really not comfortable on offense. He’s shown flashes of being good, but he’s a role player at best.
Caleb Daniels is a transfer from Tulane. He put up ok numbers for Tulane, but the increased level of competition has been a problem for him. Space filler more than anything else out there. Doesn’t do much well.
Cole Swider is a pretty good shooter percentage-wise except he only takes a couple shots a game. He is limited athletic and gets beat on defense all day. His minutes have been shrinking.
Bryan Antoine is real good but he’s in the dog house. Don’t expect to see much of him on Friday. Most Villanova fans expect him to transfer this off season. He just didn’t fit with the team and coach had no confidence in him. It’s a shame, he could be a super star somewhere else. Nobody knows why the kid can’t get off the bench. He’s way better defensively than Daniels or Swider so that can’t be the reason.
Big Dix is another good one that doesn’t get off the bench. He was getting minutes early in the year and looked good, but something happened. Again, nobody knows, but he’s way better defensively than the guys out there so that’s not the reason.
That said, it would be pretty bad if Jay lost to Winthrop. Even with this coat hanger of a team he should be able to beat Winthrop by double digits. The talent is there, but it’s just been poorly managed this year.
Also, 90% of what I just posted would get somebody banned by headpainter. So it’s nice to have a place to speak openly and honestly about the team.
