It's upon us....glad that Russ is back. As we saw last game, he's really important. Ball moves much better when he's in there, we seem to generate more turnovers, and he has a knack for hitting big shots. Not really here for a recap of Elon, but if Vaudrin is really only going to shoot 40% from the free throw line, he needs reduced minutes---even though he's really a very good all around player. He's just killing us at the line, especially since he gets there so much!
As for conference play, here's how I see it:
1. Radford: Beat a really good Richmond team tonight, for the 2nd best win for the conference (after our St. Mary's win). They are veteran, have the best player in the conference in Jones, and though they've been inconsistent, I have to put them here after seeing us against Elon. I thought Tenn Tech might be a fluke--but Elon is bad and gave us a game. So I give RU the slight edge right now.
2. Winthrop: We seem to play to our competition. That's great against Duke and St. Mary's, not so good against Elon and Tenn Tech. A mark of a young team which is what we are. I just think we may be a year away, the biggest collection of talent in the league but it's mostly very young. The one hope is that since we are young and have had various injuries--I don't think we've played near to how well we can play. So I think we will finish near the top, but give Ru the edge now.
3. Campbell: Surprising, but they have played fairly well, beating a lot of bad teams by small margins, and no significant wins, but hey, that's better than the rest of the conference save WU/RU. Big game for WU coming up on the road there. Win that and we will be in really good position to win the league.
4. UNCA: They are playing much better than last year, though really anything would have been better. They look like those Duggar VMI teams---lots of pressure, but if you don't turn the ball over 20-25 times you are going to shoot 50% percent or better otherwise against them. I see them beating a RU or WU, but also losing to a presby.
5. Gardner Webb: Have some talent, but seem really dysfunctional especially of late. I thought they pre season mags picking them was a little weird--they got hot last year at the end, but otherwise were not the top team, and lost their two key guys. Perez is talented, but they don't have as much talent as the team that finished what 3rd/4th last year?
6 through the bottom: Various levels of horrendous. I see High Point/Upstate/Presby battling for the absolute bottom, and maybe Hampton can break into the top 5 if Marrow comes back healthy. But I really think the game for the top 5 is who can avoid laying an egg against all these really bad teams.
